Race for the Cure 2011

Okay, making this short and sweet because I've been up since 5 am, didn't sleep well last night, and procrastinated all day on getting this up, but HA! I got it up today! I said HA! And soon I will be going to bed.

Slideshow of our walk is just below.

Carus and I met up with some friends (Woo! Jessica, Gwen, Lisa, and Sarah) and Gramma Barbara and road the Max train downtown, then met up with a couple of my coworkers (shout out to Trish and Millie!) and participated in the 5K walk. I think I heard something about there were 500,000 participants down at Portland's waterfront today.  Or maybe that was just the walk...that seems small for the whole thing. So don't quote me, I don't know what I'm talking about.

We got separated from Jessica and Gwen and we kinda meandered really slowly this year and ended up at the very end of the walkers. Oh well, no rushing necessary! It's not too late to donate if you still want to - Donate here and pass on this link: http://tinyurl.com/3jjmnlx

As for today's 7 Days photos. Carus and I are cheater mic-cheaters and didn't take our own photos. I took hers and a friend took mine...

Today was also a theme day with the theme "Inside" but we did the opposite with "Outside." We were Outside for the Walk. Carus's 7Days, day 2. We asked if she could take a photo with the police officer on his bike and he said sure. Then he asked if she wanted to climb onto the bike, but of course!

It's that time again - Race For The Cure Portland 2011

Ask_people_2011_Race_banner.jpg

Hello all,

It's that time again and I'm back to bug you a bit.  Carus and I will be walking the 5K in the 20th Annual Komen Portland Race for the Cure this September 18, 2011.  Adam doesn't want to participate this year, but it's okay, we will be joined by my mother-in-law, Barbara, and several friends and coworkers participating.  Please join us, we'd love to walk with you.  We are doing the un-timed 5K walk.

Whether or not you donate, please forward this email to your friends and family - how many people can we reach?

First some facts from Komen (edited by me) and a few from straight from me and then I'll find the links you'll need to give us some money to help in our efforts to find a cure for breast cancer.

The Facts:
  •  One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.  Think of the friends, aunts, neighbors, sisters, mothers and grandmothers in your life, easily eight women.
  • My grandmother has had breast cancer, and thankfully has survived.
  • My cousin has breast cancer, and is still fighting.
  • One of the women Carus and I will be walking with this year battled breast cancer last year and is thankfully winning right now.  Her daughter will also be walking with us.
  • It's clear that Komen has made a difference in the last 20 years.  20 years ago, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer diagnosed at its earliest stage was 74%.  Now we celebrate that it is 98%.  But, until no one fears a diagnosis of breast cancer, we still have a lot of work to do.

Will you help me?  If you have only $5 to give, I will be as grateful as if you have $50 or $500.  The size of your contribution is not important, because every dollar adds up and makes a difference.

You can donate online by clicking the link below, or you can donate by mail (please indicate on behalf of "my name" in the memo line of your check), along with matching gift forms if your employer has a matching gift program, to:

Race for the Cure Portland 2010

Race for the Cure Portland 2010

Sunday, September 19th, Adam, Carus, and I met up with Gramma Barbara to walk in Portland's Race for the cure. We had joined my Providence Diagnostic Imaging team. Providence Cancer Center got every team member a bright pink wig. While Adam was a great sport and did put on the wig for me to get a picture at home, and did put it on for a moment there at the event site, his embarrassment over being a boy with a pink wig won out and he took it off.  I had teased him that I was going to make him wear it, but in the end I let him be.  There were other male team members wearing the pink wigs, but it has to take a lot of confidence for a boy to pull that off and at Adam's age I am glad he doesn't have it.  He will, just not yet.

Race for the Cure Portland 2010After their games on Saturday, and getting up at 6 a.m. to go to the race, the kids were pretty tired and weren't too enthused about walking 5K with me. But they toughed it out and made it with very minimal complaints.

They changed the route this year and because of it there was an overlapping-type point.  We walked one direction down the street a-ways and then went around a caution cone and walked back the other way.

All along the caution tape kids were playing with it and hanging on it and someone ended up putting their hand out for a high five.

And it spread.

Most of the kids and a few of the adults were holding out their hands and everyone would high five them as they walked by.  Adam and Carus LOVED this - as did most of the other kids.  And so many adults were enjoying having all these kids to high five.

Encouragement to keep going. Keep walking.  Encouragement to keep "fighting".

Race for the Cure Portland 2010

Northwest Oregon is pretty famous for the amount of rain we get and this year has been pretty wet; so of course it was forecasted to rain Sunday.

The forecast had actually said it was going to rain pretty much all day.  But most of the walk was dry.

The event's grounds (Tom McCall Waterfront Park in Portland) were all muddy from all the rain we've been getting, but the sun was out with the few gray clouds and we weren't too worried.

I still brought the umbrellas because I didn't want my camera getting wet.  And good thing too, because in the last stretch of the walk, probably no more than 1/2 mile from the finish line, it downpoured. It only lasted a few minutes, or perhaps yards and we just walked out of the rain, but we did have the umbrellas up for a bit.

The rest of the day - ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS! High 70s and sunny!

Race for the Cure Portland 2010

There is always something that makes me tear up at this event.

Actually, it is a lot of somethings.

All the pink shirts (which are survivors and current fighters).

This pink shirt in particular started me off.

Look at all those names for just one person.  Including her.

In celebration of Me!

This was another one.

If you can't read that little boy's card it says:

"I race in celebration of MY MOM"

And he was walking hand and hand with his mom.

I am so glad she was there to hold your hand little guy, I hope she will be for a long time yet.

After we crossed the finish line we headed for the Max Station for the long crowded ride back to Beaverton where we had parked our cars and then we went for our annual post race breakfast/brunch/lunch.

I didn't see the goofy face Adam is making trying to get a drink of his rootbeer until after I sat back down and was too tired to worry about it.

I hope we get to help in the very teeny tiny way we do for a long time yet.

Or until they find a cure. Which ever comes first.

PS: You can still donate and help save some tatas!

Race for the Cure 2009

Sorry this took so long getting up. I was waiting for a copy of Barbara's pictures.

The kids had spent the night out at Gramma's house so we met at the max station to ride downtown to waterfront together. We got there after our 'race' started, about 10 minutes after it started, but it was all good. We had time to walk around a few booths, pick up a couple pieces of loot, and then start walking and we were by no means anywhere near the end of the line.

Carus was cranky, but after we got walking a bit and some minor threats from me she was starting to cheer up. . . .Then we saw Chewbacca. We saw him last year and the kids hoped to see him again this year. He was accompanied by a Storm Trooper, Bobofett, Obi Wan Kenobi, and Princess Leia. Those guys were great about stopping and taking a TON of pictures and I'm sure it took them three times longer than anyone else to actually finish the walk.

After crossing the finish line, we wondered around for a bit, got to pet a Linx cat that was sitting on someone's shoulder, and got some bread that is made without flour and is so good that it is almost - almost - worth $5 for a small loaf.

After the race we rode the max back to our cars and then went for lunch at Shari's. Several other participants had the same idea and we recognized a lot of shirts. We recognized one guy from the race, but thought he was bald and had painted a pink ribbon on the back of his head - nope, that was his hair shaved in the shape of a ribbon and dyed pink. Adam and Carus thought that was so cool and asked me if I could take a picture of it since they were too shy to ask themselves. They want to get Robert to do it next year. And Adam wants to build an R2D2 to walk with us next year too.

I hope to get to see the end of the need for this fundraiser in my lifetime - or maybe Adam and Carus will be that lucky.

We need your support!

I know a lot of my friends and family just got this in an email, but for those I don't have email addresses for or those I forgot to add to the distribution list, read it here. :)

The kids and I are going to participate in Komen Portland Race for the Cure® on September 20th, 2009. We will be walking in the 5K walk and Robert's mom, Barbara will be joining us. In addition to us walking with the thousands others we are trying to raise funds to support the fight to save lives and end breast cancer forever. If you are near us, or will be visiting us, I highly recommend participating. Last year was extremely moving and amazing. Survivors get a pink shirt instead of a white one - and there are just way too many pink shirts but at the same time, not enough.

If you would like to participate there are many options. You can do the Adult 5K competitive (chip-timed) run, 5k Walk, 1 Mile Walk, 5k Co-ed Run, or 5k Women's Run. Or, you can participate in the Sleep for a Cure. You will receive an official race T-shirt and a commemorative pin in the mail. Click here for more info and a little video.

Please pass this info around to build support, the team, and get donations!

75% of all funds raised will provide the following services for local women:

*Education about breast cancer and early detection
*Information and support to breast cancer survivors and their families
*Mammograms for the uninsured or underinsured
*Transportation and treatment support for survivors

In addition, 25% of their revenue is combined with Komen Affiliates nationwide, making Komen for the Cure® the largest private funder of breast cancer research in the world! Komen funding has touched every medical advancement related to breast cancer to date!
