Merry Christmas!

Merry Xmas from all of us! (Woohoo! Family picture!)

And from Scout and Carus...

And me at the barn!

An outtake.  He started closing his eye like he was falling asleep standing there, Carus started petting his chin and his head went lower and lower and the eye stayed close.  Silly Scout.

End of the week crazies

The last half of the week always feels extra crazy and busy and mind numbing.  From Wednesday until Friday night I feel like I'm rushing around getting nowhere and nothing done. Not fun.

This week seemed extra hair-pully-outty, for some reason.

The weekend is very much needed, and appreciated.

Wednesday, I did find a few moments to relax and go out to the garden on my lunch break. Spring is so close and I'm anxious to get the garden growing again.

These are the garlic I planted in the fall.  I have three small rows of about 10 bulbs.

Valentine's day and I got these lovely roses from my Valentine, Robert.  I worked at the hospital Thursday instead of at home and the flowers were very nice to come home to.

I spent a few minutes of my lunch break sunbathing with Timmy kitty. While the sun is still being scarce I try to soak it up as much as possible and Friday was one of those days where I really wish I could wheel my computer outside and work in the sunshine.

Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving was a lovely day.  Our guests were my in-laws, Barbara and Alan, Alan's parents, Dave and Eula, and grandmothers, Helen and Edna.  This has been the usual Thanksgiving crowd for the past few years.  I wish some of my family could make it, but if I have to holiday without them it's nice to have some lovely company.

Since I was busy with the food, I put the camera on auto and passed it over to Barbara and let her take photos.  I did take the family sitting down to dinner shot that I counted as my 366 and one other shot in the slideshow, but the rest where by Barbara.  Thanks dear!

And then I got a week behind...

It started out as just "slacking" for the weekend because I didn't want to turn my computer on.  I was pouting about my mini vacation being up too soon.  And then I put it off until I finished a task, or chore, or or or...

And now it's been a full week since I've posted.

I've stayed caught up with my 366s though, so that's the important thing.  At least to me.

Now, let's get this party started.

Technically this was the last day of the Reverb Broads, but I wasn't inspired to do the prompt then and I'm not inspired to do it now so I'll pass.  It's due to return in December and I'll decide then if I want to do it.

Had to make a trip to Home Depot. Again.  We walked from one end of HD to the other several times, always remembering something else we needed that "convienently" was on the other side of the store.  Here we were attempting to find a new flag pole for our flag without having to buy a full new set of flag pole, flag, and mounting bracket since our mount and flag were still in good shape - just the pole broke.  The copper pipe would have worked beautifully except that it was kind of heavy and very expensive.  We ended up settling on a wood broom handle replacement thing....that was too big for the mount.

Robert is making progress on the reshaping of the yard project.  He is leveling it out at different levels since our yard is on a hill and then the big pile he and Leia are standing on will go away and his shop will be built.  We are also discussing adding more grass, some other plants, and maybe a stone path.  Not sure if this all will get completed this summer or if our funds will run out before our oomph does. We'll see!

Actually, the pile is on it's way out.  Robert has a coworker that came over and picked up 1/3 of the pile already and will take the rest too.

Garden update!

These are the pickling cucumbers. YUM!  There are so many little bitty baby cucumbers all over those vines. I better start researching pickling recipes.  I have some other cucumbers - bush cucumber - that weren't doing great.  They got some powdery mildew because it's been so rainy (surprise surprise) and I almost lost one.  The mildew started to show up on these cucumbers as well as the squash and zucchini so I went to the store to get fungicidal soap.  I couldn't find fungicidal soup, but I found this Ortho organic fungicide and 95% of the mildew was cleared up with one application.  All the affected plants have bounced back and I've done another application to get rid of a few of the remaining spots.

After another trip to HD to return to the too big wooden handle, we found a metal pole with a little plastic rake on the end.  Robert just removed the rake and voila - new flag pole. Just in time for the 4th of July.

Happy 4th of July!

We hosted our 3rd annual 4.O.J. BBQ with some of the usual suspects in attendance.  Here is Carus and her friend S.  We adore S and her parents.  We really need to work on getting together more often than the 3ish times of year we have managed.

The spread.  Well, most of it.  The potato salad was getting mixed up - soon to be put in the black bowl, and the chicken were on the grill getting all yummy.

Some of the main gang.  We had a few show up later, but for some reason I didn't get pictures of them.  I focused more on maning the grill and hanging out than taking pics.

Getting my grill on! I make some really good BBQ chicken.  The secret is... don't over cook them! For legs and thighs 30 minutes in the oven at 375 degrees and then sauce them and finish on the grill.  I use propane and keep the heat about 400 degrees.  (You can do them completely on the grill or completely in the oven too.)  Pull them off when they are no longer pink and let them sit 10 minutes (or are just barely pink and then put them in an off but still warm oven for 10 minutes).  Don't overcook the chicken!  Actually, don't over cook any meat or food. Trust me.

Instead of putting on our own show this year, we went and watched the Forest Grove firework show put on by the fire department.  It was great!  We had a few straggling sparklers left over from last year that we let the kids do, because it's not 4th of July without sparklers.  They didn't want to stay lit though.  Next year I'll have to get some fresh ones.

Carus and I - okay mostly me - have been chicken sitting for our friends/neighbors (frieghbors? Neighbends?) while they vacay and have fun.  Chickens are so amusing.  I pulled this one out for a little pet which she wasn't too excited about, but she dealt with it.

The other two chickens the next day.  I've brought down some scrap foods for them to snack on and they weren't able to break open the cherry tomatoes so I gave them a hand and had to encourage them to give them a try.

While walking down the hill to check on the chickens Carus was messing with her shadow.  It looks like she has a hand growing out of the back of her head.  It made us crack up.

My first harvest!  A handful of green beans.  I was expecting peas first, or that bitty zucchini that's been growing for 2 weeks, but nope.  The green beans rallied after a recent fertilization with steer poo and are growing like mad.  Steer poo is good poo!

Weekend Ketch-up

See what I did there?  Clever huh?

Probably not too clever since I went ahead and pointed it out, but yeah. I get some points.

Onwards and upwards.  Or something.

How come weekends aren't long enough?

Friday -
Some baby chicks that our neighbor/friends just got.  Baby  Buff Orpington and baby Rhode Island Red. They are adorable, of course.
132_366 05-11-12

Saturday-
Saturday, I went to a baby shower for a friend who is having twins.  It was an adorable party and she made out like a bandit, which is good with twins coming along.
133_366 05-12-12

Sunday-
Mother's Day dinner at the in-laws with the in-laws and some bonus grammas.  The whole gang.

Robert broke the pizza heart, hehehee.  Dinner was lovely, minimal work for me.  We used the good china (paper plates) and had root beer floats

Christmas day wrap up

Carus 7days5 "My favorite gift."

We were very lucky to find this piano on Craigslist for a really good deal.  At first we were looking at console upright pianos, but those that weren't gone by the time we called about them and close enough to us (under 50 miles) that we could consider getting them here, were too expensive, and those that were in our price range were too far away.  Then there was the question of how we'll get it here, how we'll move it at both ends cause they are heavy and we just about gave up.  Robert found this one and went to look at it as like a last hope and it worked out great.  The bench corner was chewed on a little by their dog, but we recovered it no problem and you could never tell.

But before all that, there was the rest of the day.  I didn't get a lot of photos, but that's okay.  It was a great day.  We didn't get up super early, took our time eating breakfast and opening presents.  After presents I put the roast in the oven and went to lay down for a nap.  I was to work the swing shift and since I never sleep well Christmas Eve I was tired.  I didn't get much of a nap though, just a few winks.  Robert played with his new miter saw and Carus was playing with her new piano which don't work well with napping.

Soon I gave up trying to sleep and came out to finish dinner.  I did all the prep work for dinner on Christmas Eve so I didn't have to do much work - just pop things in the oven and cut up fresh vegetables for a veggie tray.  After dinner and clean up we opened gifts from the in-laws (that's them at the table with us) and mingled for a bit before I started working.  Work went well, not too busy - just enough to keep me occupied.  I've heard a lot that it sucks that I had to work on Christmas, and yes it does - but it doesn't.  The hospital is open all the time so it only makes sense that we are too.  We all (my coworkers and I) alternate holidays.  I've had a few Christmas's off so it makes sense that I do one, and now I'll get a few off before I have another go.

Now back to the beginning of the day for more photos.

Opening their first gifts.

Adam's chess board.  This gift Adam sorta knew he was getting because Fed Ex sucks. They delivered the package and left it sitting on the front porch and didn't ring the bell or knock. I was working in direct sight of the door, and the dogs go nutso anytime anyone comes near the door, so I know they didn't knock.  And then Adam came home from school and found the box. It had a description of the board on the box. I went with the "it's Christmas time, everyone recycle boxes like crazy" lie but I don't think he believed me.  He still likes his board so YAY...

Carus reading her new Secret Agent Josephine Colors book. (She has two more books out for kids, usually younger kids than my kids, but Carus liked the book just the same.  SAJ is a brilliant, fun illustrator and writer. Her blog is full of other great stuff too.  The books are also available for Ipad, Iphone or Kindle.)

PUPPY!!! Oh, and some other stuff

I don't know about you, but my Independence Day was pretty darn awesome!

We had our annual 4th of July BBQ with many friends and some family.  There was lots of good food, many great stories and laughs, and a 2-1/2 hour firework show to cap off the night.  But more about that later.

First - update on the puppy Leia.

She is fitting in better and better, and has calmed down a lot from the first evenings' nonstop running and playing and running.  I think she was just over excited.  And while she is definitely not potty trained (I think I read somewhere once that a dog literally cannot be potty trained before 12 weeks) with good timing and some consistency I think we'll be okay.  We've had a few accidents (just #1), but I've stocked up on carpet cleaning spray and the whole house is in on the training so we're cool.

She didn't sleep well the first night, which we thought was because the pet carrier she was in (the one we already owned) wasn't big enough for her, and after a not so restful night of her whining to be let out, and then bouncing all over the bed after a short hour sleep after being let out (we are pets on the bed people, but since she had been sleeping in a crate already we wanted to make the transition easier on her) I was up with her at 7 a.m.

Now, you might be asking yourself, "Hey, wait a tick, isn't she Robert's puppy?" And I will say, yes.  She is.  But she is also a family dog, and since I was the head for the New Puppy Campaign and Robert's a turd when he is cranky and we were expecting company I was all gung-ho about taking the first shift.  I also made the kids help, which they did because PUPPY!!!!

Then, when Robert woke up, I was like - okay, I have played with her and played with her and then took her for a walk and played with her some more.  She should seriously like crash any second, but until then you get to be in charge cause I want some sleep!  And then I took a nap, and she ended up taking one with me. And Robert made potato salad.

Fast forward to last night, and we chose to forgo the whole cage/whining saga (new carrier borrowed from our awesome neighbor that is MUCH larger) and let her sleep on the bed.  A big part of this decision making - it was 12:30 a.m.  This worked out well until I woke to her trying to get a drink of water out of the dish in the bathroom at 2 a.m.  I figured since she was up and I was up I might as well try a potty trip so I didn't wake up to a mess in my bedroom, and that was a good idea.

The rest of the night went off well and she slept another hour after I got up at 6:15 (for work - I switched shifts - didn't think that one through all the way). But I'm exhausted...

Robert was off today (vacation day) so after he got up, I told him the next 2 a.m. potty break is all on him.  And he agreed.  No whining or arguing.

It might have had something to do with how tired I look (according to him and I don't disagree, there are mirrors in this house).  And then he made me lunch and I've been ordered to take a nap after work.

I think I'll keep him.

* * * * * * * * *
Well that was a good nap, and much needed. I had trouble getting up after the 2 hours were up (I wanted to be able to sleep tonight).

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming - the 4th.  I'm just going to share the 365 here for the 4th and for today, but I will direct you here to my Flickr stream for the rest of the party.
