Spoke Too Soon

Yeah, I spoke too soon.

Oregon will not be returning to the classroom this year.

No official news yet on graduation but I'm not expecting it to happen.

Sad, frustrated, angry, disappointed, and heart-broken for Carus for all those missed milestones she would have at the end of her Senior year. And for Robert and I too. We got a kid through to adulthood and they're a pretty damn decent human being. It was also our celebration.

*Sigh*

Highs and lows. Right?

First Days of School

Carus started 7th grade Wednesday.

Adam started 10th grade Thursday.

I was a dork that forgot to get photos in the morning before they headed off to the bus stop so their looks of exasperation are for me and my requests for photos when they got home.

Adam's story

Adam recently had to do a writing assignment for school.

And he let me read the story, and I liked it.  It's supposed to be a short story and he said he gave it a final ending, but I think maybe it could be expanded on if he wanted.

I told him that I liked it so much that I wanted to post it on the blog - and he let me.

Please comment or email me with feedback for him, especially if you like it.  It's like, 'yeah yeah mom likes it, she has to cause she's mom'. So if it came from someone else it might be more internalized.

John sat up in bed, startled by the sudden howl-like sound that pierced the pounding of the rain. After a few seconds, the sound stopped and faded into the rhythmic patter of the rain. He lay back down, hoping that he would be able to get a few more hours of sleep tonight. It felt as though he was asleep for only few seconds when the sound came back, but closer.

“What is making that noise?” he said, getting out of bed. “Whatever it is, it has kept me from sleeping for weeks.” He got up and grabbed a flashlight on his way downstairs.  He went for the phone in the living room. He picked it up and dialed the animal control number.  He stood there, tapping his foot impatiently while waiting for somebody to pick up. He only got static.

“Storm must have knocked out the lines.” He checked his cell phone with the dim hope that he had at least one bar. “Blast, not even an emergency line,” he tossed his phone down to the table.

“Well, there’s nothing else to do but find what it is myself ," he said as he got dressed, grabbed a coat and a flashlight, and headed out the door. The night was dark without the moon overhead, and the rain was a constant companion as John walked around his house, shining the light under bushes and over hedges. He was behind his house when he heard it again, this time in a different direction than before. He followed the sound down the street until he came to the park, the swings drifting back and forth in the wind. The sound rang out again, clearer and closer, sounding more and more like the howl of a wolf.

John followed it to the edge of the playground part of the park, where the hiking trail began. He never went down them, not having time for it, but he knew that the paths were narrow and winding, and a person should be careful wandering them, especially at night. He shined his light down the nearest path, seeing nothing but tree trunks and rain. He jumped as an especially loud howl rang out, sounding as if it were calling out to others. He stood there, trying to decide if he should find out more about the sound, or if he should go back to the warm, dry bed that was calling him. In the end, he decided to go down the path for a little bit. “It’s not like the paths split or are overgrown or anything,” he said, trying to reason with himself.

He walked for a while, glad for the cover the trees provided from the cold wind and rain. The light went back and forth along the path, finding the fallen leaves and broken branches and chasing the shadows away, only for them to dart back when it moved on. He followed the path for five minutes, then ten, then fifteen, with the only change being less rain falling through the canopy above and new trees to make shadows to scare him. He kept seeing shadows, that seemed to be following him, taunting him by just being beyond sight, but when he shone his light towards them, they always darted away, seeming to laugh at his attempts to see them. After a while, he forgot them as he continued further into the depths of the forest.

Minutes later, he came to a crossroads between two paths. As he stood there, trying to decide whether or not he should go back or keep going forward, the sound came out of the shadows of one of the paths, loud enough to be feet away. John nearly dropped the light with fright as he turned and ran down the other path, deeper into the forest. He ran and ran; hoping whatever made the noise wasn't behind him. He kept thinking that he could feel the hot breath of some monster breathing down his neck or at his heels, and the claws or fangs were but inches from his throat. Fear fueled by his imagination propelled him to the fastest he has probably ever run. He ran with the branches whipping out of the darkness, roots reaching up to trip him. He stumbled into a clearing, falling face first into the tall grass. He quickly turned on his back and threw his hands up to stop the thing from getting directly to his throat or face. The only sound in the clearing was the wind moving grass and leaves, and the harsh sound of his breathing. He sat up, putting his arms down, and looked around the clearing. There were several paths going into and out of the clearing, and there was trash around as well, probably the remains of high school parties. He stood up, and looked for his flashlight. He found it with the light flickering, the battery almost dead from the nights' adventures. He grabbed and tapped it against his hand to try to get it to stop flickering. It did, but only for a bit.

He walked over to the other side of the clearing, putting as much distance as possible between him and whatever made that noise. At the far end, he found a few more paths, with one set a little further back than the others, almost hidden by the bushes that ringed the clearing. The entrance was marked by an arch, weather beaten, covered in ivy and nearly broken. He moved closer, inspecting the arch, and was surprised to find that there was letters carved into it, faded by time, much of it incomprehensible, but enough was there to be read. His sputtering light focused on the only part that could still be seen, and as he pulled away ivy, he saw the words “…mors expectet omnibus vobis …” John didn't know what language it was in, but he figured it wasn't a “hello, how are you?” sort of message.  A threat from a many year old piece of rock was preferable to whatever was back there, so he continued, passing through the arch and continuing on his escape from the thing. He didn't run, all that would accomplish would be him on his face again, but he didn't walk either. He wanted to get as much distance as possible from that thing. As he moved down the path, the flashlight flickered more and more and got dimmer and dimmer. He was worried that he might be left alone in the dark with whatever there was on the path.

The path was much more twisting and narrower than the other one, as if it was forgotten. The branches of trees and bushes kept leaning out of the shadows to hit him in the face. He kept moving, fear overriding his exhaustion, forcing him to keep going and get as much distance as he could from the thing. The flickering shadows thrown in front of him by his dying flashlight made him jump, looking like a hand, or claw, was reaching out to trip him.

After an hour of jumping at shadows and looking over his shoulder, John reached an end to the path. It was another clearing; it was near the oldest part of the forest, the trees much taller and much thicker than the others. The clearing was similar to the one before, but much smaller. The storm, getting stronger, whipped the tall grass and tree branches back and forth, and was tossing rain nearly horizontal through the air, blurring the trees and leaves. On the far side of the clearing, there was an outcrop of stone, as tall as some of the nearby trees.

He moved towards the center, trying to see if it was possible to climb the stone to get a view of the area. Hopefully, he would be close enough to the edge of the forest to find a way out. But as he reached the center, he heard a growling noise behind him. Not even turning to see what it was, he bolted for the rock, hoping that whatever the thing was, it couldn't climb. But as he reached up for a handhold, there was more growling, this time, to his left and right. The thought that there was more sent a burst of adrenaline through his system, and he climbed like an experienced mountaineer. He stopped on a ledge about twenty feet up. He sat down, trying to catch his breath, and with the last of the flashlights feeble rays, he saw what was chasing him all through the night.

They were wolves, but not the normal kind. These things were easily twice the size of a normal wolf. If he were to stand next to one, its shoulder would probably come up to his elbow. Their fur was a dark grey, almost black. Even as high up as he was, he could see the fangs, each longer than his finger, each eager to rip into his flesh. They were crowding at the bottom of the rock, staring straight at him, growling and baring their fangs. Then one howled. It was the same sound he had been hearing for the past few weeks. The howl was loud enough to be heard easily over the sound of the rising storm. The other two joined in, creating a sound that would be beautiful if it wasn't coming from beasts that are trying to eat him. Then, in the distance, there was an answering call. It didn't sound like the others did, they sounded sad and lonely. This one sounded excited, like it knew there was fresh meat nearby.

Then the wolves below him started to jump, each leaping ten feet into the air. They started hopping up ledges, getting closer and closer. John immediately turned and continued his climb up the rock, going higher and higher to escape the wolves below, getting closer and closer. Nearly half way up, he came to another ledge; this one was much larger and seemed to go all the way around the rock. He thought he saw a cave in the side of a steep part of the outcrop, but the wind and rained blurred everything until he could only see what was in front of him. He continued up, going and going until he could go no further. There was only a little bit left above him, not even climbable.

John then turned, hoping that the wolves couldn't climb this high. There were more wolves on the second ledge, many more than there were at the bottom, and he could see more coming. They leapt and leapt, but they could not get a grip on the rain slicked rock and there was no ledges close enough. So they just gathered and gathered, until there was probably thirty of them, waiting, jumping, howling. The flashlight then died, and left him in the dark, with nothing but the wind, rain, and the sound of a pack of blood-thirsty wolves below him.

He sat there for hours, terrified that one wolf would have found a way up and would be sneaking out of the darkness, about to leap at him and throw him into the pack below. The storm continued to rage on, sending more wind and rain. At what must have been the hour just before dawn, he heard a voice right beside him.

“What are you doing here?” it came out through the sound of the wind. “Why are you here?”

“I d-don’t know”

“Do you realize what you have done?” it hissed out, sounding annoyed, but not scared.

“How d-did you g-get up here without those things knowing about it?”

“They know”

John started to back away, “W-what do you mean ‘They know’?” He realized that as soon as the voice started to speak, the wolves didn't howl, growl or bark. They stopped jumping, and seemed to be just sitting there, watching, and waiting. Even the wind seemed to get quieter. “Who are you?”

A grin seemed to loom out of the darkness, bringing with it a man. He was tall and skinny, with hair that grew past his shoulders, but no beard. He wore rags; all in black, making it seem as if his head was floating in the darkness. The smile had no warmth to it, it was the smile a hunter would give to prey it had spent a while hunting. It was the smile of a wolf.

The man came towards John, picking him up as if he weighed nothing. “My name is Lupus, and my children are hungry,” and he threw John off the ledge and towards the base of the rock. The pack gathered there, some leaping up to get the first bite. As he landed, the pack descended.

Back to School days 1 and 2 aka The Bus Saga 2013

246/365 (9/3/13)
246_365 09-03-13

Wednesday brought Adam's first day of school - first day of 9th grade - and the start of Bus Saga 2013.  Perhaps you remember all the issues I had with the bus company and getting them to pick up Carus last year?  Well this year, problems are with Adam's route.

247/365 (9/4/13) First day of 9th grade, aka "Hurry up and take the picture."
247_365 09-04-13

When I received route info for Carus I should have called about Adam's, but I just assumed that since they've never had a problem figuring out when and where he needed picked up that all was golden.

I should have known better.

Copy and pasted from my Facebook statuses cause it's faster than typing it out again:

The Bus saga 2013: Never received info for when Adam would be picked up by the bus. This is a first. Usually they forget Carus. (We got her info, we'll find out tomorrow if they pick her up.)

We get up at 6:30 to get ready and call bus company anticipating a 7ish pick up time.

Actual pick up time: "Around 8 am. I'll be sure to let the bus driver know he actually has a stop on that street."

And then later Wednesday:

The Bus Saga 2013 continues:

I called back later in the morning to get the afternoon bus number because I forgot to ask at 6:30 a.m. before I had my coffee. Was given a different number than the one that picked Adam up. That's usual for around here, no big deal. BUT!

1) They, once again, had to look us up by address because Adam wasn't listed.

And

2) Turns out, that wasn't his bus. He discussed the stop he needed with the driver of that bus and that driver did bring him to his stop after completing his route so he's home

BUT COME ON PEOPLE!

I am politely curt on the phone.  I know it's crazy for them being the beginning of the school year and they transport all of the kids in this area - a number somewhere around 5,000 kids to several different schools. (Do not quote me on that number, for all I know it could be 2,000 or 10,000. It's my estimate.)  But it is their job. This is what they get paid for.  They are responsible for our children from bus stop to school doorway, and back.  It won't do for me to yell, scream and swear, but I am using a tone that says I'm really fed up.

Because I am.

Thursday, there were no problems for either Adam or Carus.  They were picked up, and only Carus's bus was a few minutes late (which I get, lots of kids, new routines, first day of school - totally understand running a bit late), and I was so happy to have gotten it ironed out so quickly and relatively painless (compared to last year).

Again, I should have known better.

Today!

Bus Saga 2013:  After having no problems yesterday, I thought the company got their shit together and things would be better, and then today - Adam's bus drove by him. He was out there and the bus drove right on by.  So of course, I call.

Me: "My son's bus just drove by him. Stop is.... bus number is ...."
Them: "I'm sorry.  Just wait there and I'll send him back around."
Me: "Well, how long should he wait at the stop?"
Them: "Hold on and I'll try to get him on the radio."

Them: "He'll be back around in about 7-10 minutes. He was running late and then he just passed by the stop and by the time he realized he needed to stop he was too far to be able to stop safely."
Me: "Okay. Uh, I understand things are crazy and that sometimes you get behind, but he still needs to pick up my kid though."
Them: "Well, have him out there 10 minutes early to make sure the bus sees him in time to stop."
Me, trying very hard not to just say 'what the fuck?': "Well, he was out there between 5 and 10 minutes early today and your driver didn't stop because he was running late.  I'm not going to send him out earlier just to be passed up again."

She tried to make a few excuses. I explained that this wasn't the first time I've had issues this year let alone last year and that I was frustrated and not okay with the half-assery.  I didn't swear at her, I didn't blame her, I didn't raise my voice, and I only sputtered a little in keeping from doing either.  And then she apologized, said that I was right and that they would try to do better. I thanked her and hung up.

Adam got picked up shortly after and now I'm writing this out before I have to work (though it won't post until this afternoon after I've taken my 365 for today).

Her apologizing was probably a bit of blowing smoke up my ass.  She might have been thinking that they were in the right - but she apologized because it was the right thing to do.  They might have trouble doing their jobs, but at least they have good customer service about it.

In other news:

Robert had his second steroid injection for his back pain/sciatica pain today.  It went as quick and smoothly as the first time.  Crossing fingers and saying prayers that this time it will work and he won't be in pain anymore.

I am photographing a wedding tomorrow and Carus is going as my assistant/second shooter.  We are excited, and nervous, and excited.

Hey look, I have a blog.

Did you know that radishes can have flowers?

157_365 06-06-13
(157/365)

I didn't.

We had a hot week (80s) and quite a few of my remaining radishes went to flower... or bolted... whatever that's called.

Lookie. Radish flowers.

Instead of pulling them, like I probably should, I'm letting them go.  I don't need the space (yet) and I'm curious.

I'll call it doing science.

Dogwood tree flowers.  Because of these flowers, particularly the pink versions, dogwoods are my favorite trees.  They're pretty in the fall too.

159_365 06-08-13
(159/365)

Fuzzy flowers.  They are going to go in the front flower bed if I ever get around to planting them.  And instead of those cacti that look fuzzy but are sharp and pointing and hurt when you pet them, this flower is actually soft.

My first client's images all ready to be delivered with my new business cards.  I was so happy they liked them. (Instagram photo taken at like 11:58 pm when I realized I hadn't gotten a photo yet)

Last day of school.  Picture taken after school because Carus reminded me at bedtime Sunday night that she wanted to bring cookies for last day of school festivities and I ran out to get those cookies in the morning while they were getting ready and got back in time to get them on the bus and nothing else.  Yes, Adam wore his suit to school.  He likes to dress up and it was an excuse to wear it.  This picture was also right before taking him to his first school dance.  The school has done other dances, this one was just the first he was interested in.  Compare them to their first day of school pictures.  Carus still wants to be an artist, and Adam still isn't sure.  It's been suggested he become a teacher or an engineer.  He says maybe and then moves on.  Adam made the honor roll this year.  Carus would have as well (her grades are better than his) but her school doesn't do honor roll (weird?).

African daisy in my yard.  Much prettier in person - I'm not great photographing flowers.

(163/365)

We went to the library and to Forest Grove's Farmers Market this evening.  They didn't have much for produce yet (just some berries).  We had dinner at Pizza Schmizza which has some interesting art on the walls.  I had my camera along because I needed a picture for the day and thought I'd find something interesting "downtown".

So ha, I'm caught up again.

And I'm caught up with my photography business work (i.e. editing pictures and preparing them for clients) and work work is caught up too. I'm feeling pretty cocky right about now. (knock on wood)

And now a shameless plug:

If you haven't already, and are on Facebook, give my page a like - www.facebook.com/portraitsbybecca and also share with your friends and family.  The more love I get on Facebook, the more I'm seen and potential clients become actual clients.

Bragging on my kid a bit

Adam was nominated by his math teacher to be recognized as an outstanding student.  Each teacher was asked to choose their best boy student and best girl student to be recognized with a breakfast and award with a special statement from the nominating teacher explaining why they were chosen.

That breakfast and award ceremony was Wednesday morning before school.  Adam dressed up because he likes wearing his suit and he felt it was an adequate excuse to wear the suit.

156_365 06-05-13We are so proud of Adam.  He is a smart, confident, compassionate, and strong young man and I cannot believe he only has 3 days of 8th grade left.  And then in September, he'll be in high school (*sniff*), and probably getting his learner's permit (gulp).

I'm not ready...

His teacher had this to say:
"Adam constantly challenges me to find a deeper understanding of why math works the way it does. He is a perfect student for sparking conversation and often approaches problems in a way that I had never thought of.  Adam has become my class helper as he is usually the first to finish his assignment and always willing to take on any task that I need accomplished.  I will miss Adam's challenging insight and helpfulness that inspires me everyday."

I did get video (here) but Good Lord, I'm a horrible videographer...

It was mismatch day at school.  I love wacky days at the school and I think this one might be my new favorite after crazy hair day.

279_366 10-04-12

It's not quite what I had in mind when I took the photo, but I like it and I'm done playing with the photo tonight.

Hopefully I will have time (HA!) really soon to play with this photo and all the others I have just waiting for me.  Le sigh.

Carus isn't feeling too well.  She is coughing and cranky.  She was sent to bed early tonight, but she has been up several times to refill her water bottle, complain about the coughing, for one last potty trip, etc etc.  I have given her cough medicine and sore throat spray and hopefully she'll feel better in the morning.

She doesn't want to miss school at all this year, but especially tomorrow.  Tomorrow is the Fund Run, a fundraising run the school does where the kids get run the track and then get pledges for money per lap run, or a flat amount.

Plus, tomorrow is also band and dance day.  If she misses school, she misses band and dance.

I forgot to say - Carus decided on an instrument in band.  She had thought she wanted to clarinet, but decided on flute.  She was wanting to give up on it Wednesday though.  She hasn't been able to get sound out of it...yet.  We looked up some tips and technique videos on Youtube and she will try again next band.  The band teacher will get around to helping her too, but I think there are like 20-30 kids just starting band so it takes him a bit to make the rounds to all the kids.

Back to School!

250:366
250_366 09-05-12
Her sign says "Carus, 10 years old, 5th grade. I want to be an artist."  I was reminded by my cousin to do this little sign.  It will be nice when she is grown to be able to look back and see how plans have or have not changed.  I wish I had started doing it when the kids started Kindergarten though... Live and learn.

Carus got to go back first, going yesterday.  She was a bit nervous and became more and more nervous the closer we got to school.  I drove her to avoid more bus drama (and boy has it been a bunch of drama - they can't seem to be able to figure out how to get her to and from school, but anyways) and we arrived at the school a bit too early so we parked and sat for 10 minutes.

The original plan was to drop her off at the front door but when it came time to go she asked if I would walk her to the door.  I did.  As we got closer to the door, I was asked to walk her to her classroom.  I left her as she was greeting her teacher.  I wanted a hug, but I knew she wouldn't want the embarrassment so I just waved.  As I was leaving I saw a friend and found out she was in Carus's class and felt better for her.  She had been worried that she wouldn't know anyone when she didn't recognize any names on the class list.

I missed her so much.

She bounced in in the afternoon a bit late (because of the stupid bus issues - but anyways) and said she had a good day, was happy to know several people in her class, declared her teacher awesome and told me all about how she won two pieces of Jolly Rancher candy in a game played at school.

(The bus issues continue today! For some reason, they can't figure out what bus Carus is supposed to go on, and their nonchalant, "just stick her on the same bus as your son and we'll get her to school" IS NOT reassuring, nor something I'm okay with.  After yet ANOTHER phone call (this puts me at 10) I think I've FINALLY got it sorted out.  We will see tomorrow...)

251:366
251_366 09-06-12
Adam's sign says "Adam, 14 years old, 8th grade.  I don't know"  I don't think he's ever known what he wanted to be.  There have been the moments of policeman and firefighter and superhero but those were very fleeting.  There was mention last year of being a writer and he started writing a book, but that has stalled - or run out of inspiration for the time being.  He'll figure it out.

Adam was excited, nervous, and sad about having to go back to school.  He enjoys school, but it does cut into video game time and it comes with homework.  He was excited that he already knew who his math teacher would be (she was great last year so WOO!) and was excited to go back to band (the district has a great band teacher).  He has football practice directly after school so I won't get to hear how it went until much later.

Back to school shopping - Supplies - DONE!!!

216_366 08-02-12

Now just need clothes.

Carus is very excited and she picked up an outfit tonight while shopping for supplies with me.

Adam's school has gone to a light uniform/stricter uniform this year.  Khaki pants and slacks and plain colored T-shirts and polos, restricting royal blue and blood red (gang colors).

Behind

327/365 - I hung this hummingbird feeder outside my kitchen window and patiently waited for hummingbirds to visit.  Our first year here I saw very few hummers BUT this year has been good. I have 2 regulars now - possibly three - but I've only seen two at the same time.

There is one that stops and sits while eating, every time. And then there is this guy - who flits and flutters and always takes off the second I grab the camera.  Took me a bit, but I got him!

I'm very happy to start a hummingbird following. When visiting my Gramps and Granny's house, one of my favorite things to do is to sit in their breakfast nook and watch the hummingbirds come to feed.  She has 3 or 4 feeders out there and like 100 hummingbirds (probably not 100, but seriously a lot).
327_365 11-24-11 copy

328/365 - We worked on this puzzle for about a week. It was sitting out on the dining table and the cat (Simba) decided to play with it a few times.  We thought we found all the pieces he batted around the house/took off with, but apparently we missed two.  Quite frustrating... hope they turn up eventually. It was a new puzzle
328_365 11-25-11

329/365 - Out weather has cleared up and we've gotten to enjoy some big blue skies and lovely sun rises and sunsets. This is the very beginning of a sunset.
329_365 11-26-11

330/365 - Messing around with my flowers (and trying some high key).

331/365 - Leia puppy, who is learning to be a very good puppy.  She has officially learned lay down now.  We are working on roll over.

335/365 - After work I took the dogs for a short walk and checked the mail on the way back home. (Mailbox is at the bottom of the hill.) There was a lot of mail, which left me one hand for two leashes. About 2 houses away Yoda decided to go in front of me and then behind me and Leia went behind me and then in front of me and I ended up wrapped up in leashes and penguin walking. I paused and after failing to get them to unwind (and I didn't trust myself to be able to step out of the mess without falling) I called Adam to bring out the camera to get a picture and then help me.

336/365 - We went to the Forest Grove Holiday Light Parade.  We had our sweaters, coats, gloves, hats, and scarves, but it was still cold and we were quite frozen by the end of the parade.

I'm caught up again to Saturday, December 3rd.

I'm frustrated with myself that I got so behind in my 365s.  I've been thinking about whether I want to do a 365 again next year, and I think I do.  The more photographs I take, the better I get.  I think.  I feel I've been improving, at least a little bit.

If I do another 365, I'd really like to work on posting one 365 at a time, each day.

Still have a few weeks left to fully decide.

What do you think?  Should I do another 365?

First day of school and then some...

Or more appropriately, first week of school.

250/365 - First day of 7th grade and can't be bothered with first day photo... First day of school 2011 250_365 09-07-11

 Oh wait, maybe he can.
  First day of school 2011

Adam's bus didn't show up Wednesday and I had to take him to school. I had switched shifts with a coworker so I could start later and be available without worrying about being late for work since I was kind of expecting this as they didn't show up his first day last year.  Obviously, a good idea.  I think they missed him because only 7th graders and new students started Wednesday so they would have an easier time finding their way around a new school. He was the new student in a 5th/6th school last year.

I called the bus company to make sure they would show up the next day (they did) and at one point said, “we were out there 5 minutes early and stayed 15 minutes after scheduled time. Well, he was. I’m not allowed to go with him.” Bus company lady snorted. Yeah, that.

I'm trying hard not to be embarrassing but at the same time, I want to embarrass the shit out of him.

After dropping him off at school and making sure I didn't embarrass him by yelling out "Mommy loves you sweetums", even though I really wanted to, I decided to get a coffee shop coffee. I went to a local small drive-thru coffee shop.  I don't regularly get to have a coffee shop coffee since I work from home and my commute only takes my by my kitchen and not Starbucks (one corner they aren't on). This also turned out to be a great idea. Not only was I able to get my coffee and Carus a hot chocolate for $2 less than I would have at Starbucks, but she threw in doggy biscuits for Yoda (who got to go bye byes with us) and little cinnamon rolls for Carus and I for free. The doggy biscuits are a common thing to get for free, but still, he was happy. Also, I got an iced coffee (our weather has been in the 90s all week) and I found out that she uses coffee to make the ice cubes. Instead of my coffee getting watered down I got more coffee! SCORE!

I told this to Robert all amazed and everything and he looked at me like I was an idiot and said, "Uh, yeah that's a good idea, but it's not new. I used to do it with my Kool-Aid as a kid." And yes I know it is done for other drinks, and I've done it myself; however, it's not a common thing for coffee shops to do so be amazed with me. Can you tell he isn't a coffee drinker?

First day of 4th grade.

Carus’s school work started out beautifully, except her speakers weren’t loud enough and we couldn’t get the volume up no matter what we tried. We worked through it and did okay. She got all her Scantron testing (assessments required by the state) done and out of the way (until spring when she does them again), but did dally a little with the math testing and tripled the amount of time she had to spend on it. I think it taught her a lesson though, she has to be more responsible for her time and if she goofs off even a little it sucks.

When Robert came home I told him about the speakers and asked him to fix it. He checked several settings, deemed it okay, then not okay, then just needs updated drivers for speakers, then what in the world, then – oh, they came halfway unplugged.

Sad part is, I thought about checking to see if they were partially unplugged and thought, “nah, that can’t be it.” Lesson learned universe. Lesson learned.

The rest of her school is a learning process for both of us and while Thursday was better than Wednesday, and today was better than yesterday, the week was just a smidge exhausting. And it was only 3 days. I'm confident once we get the hang of this new way of school we'll both sail through each day and week easily, and frankly, that's all that is keeping me going right now. I'm spent.

Same butterfly, different side, different processing. Isn't it creepy looking? 09-08-11 (4) copy2

To top things off, work has been super fun lately! Both literally and sarcastically. We have a lot of work leading to a lot of over-time, I've been running an educational quality control process, and we have been working towards adding a new facility. (Yay expansion and Yay job security!) After the start date for the new facility had been moved back three times we found out Tuesday that it would start Wednesday morning. That was FUN! There is always an adjustment period with new things, there's just a lot of new to take in all at once. The educational project has been great and I'm learning more running it then if I wasn't.

252/365 - Leia. I was holding a pine cone up so she wouldn't come try to lick the camera. Again.

161/365 - We went out to Vancouver after work to look at a new car for Robert, which didn't pan out. But it's all gravy, we just hung out with some friends that live out there...and their dog, Kendra.

Productive

I switched shifts with a coworker for her swing shift so today I have had the morning off, and boy has it been productive!

So far today I have:
  • Gotten the kids up, fed, dressed and out the door for their second to last day of school.
  • Made the kids lunches.
  • Read 2 chapters in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. (Re-reading them in anticipation of the final movie coming out this summer.
  • Read about 50 blog posts in my reader. I got behind in reading while on vacation and now I'm struggling to catch up.
  • Made two dozen banana chocolate chip muffins. (See recipe in next post later today...or tomorrow.)
  • Stripped my bed and started the sheets in the wash.
  • Cleaned the cat box. (That right there is the biggest accomplishment. I hate cleaning that thing and avoid it like the plague.)
  • Uploaded pictures on camera from the last week so I can catch up on my 365s.
  • Created this post to catch up on my 365, which I better hurry up and finish, 10 minutes until I start work.
149/365 - Timmy kitty wanting attention. He followed us for days after our vacation soaking up as much attention as he could get.

150/365 - Timmy getting loves from Carus. He doesn't usually sit in the kids laps. He will sit next to them, but not usually on them.
150_365 05-30-11
151/365 - Our new mantis tiller so we can stop doing all of the digging/loosening of soil by hand. Robert is getting the soil ready for the sod we were putting in later in the week.
151_365 05-31-11
152/365 - Timmy finally being okay sitting by himself not being constantly petted and loved on.

153/365 - My snowballs (hydrangeas) have turned white!

154/365 - Sleepy pug
154_365 06-03-11
155/365 - 430ish square feet of sod down. Such hard work, but totally happy about doing it. Don't know if I'd ever do it again... The light green grass was our already existing grass.
155_365 06-04-11
156/365 - Timmy watching birdies
156_365 06-05-11
157/365 - My neighbor and I were talking about doing some jams/jellies this summer (I never have, she has) and she said she made some peach lavender jam/jelly (what's the difference) last summer. Then later she brought me a jar to try and it is goooood.  Ignore the grout on my kitchen counter please, I can't get it clean without pulling it all up.

Whew! And with 2 minutes to spare.

Okay off to work, and I'll try to get the recipe up for the banana chocolate chip muffins and (spoiler alert) the muffin pic for my 365 today.
